Aesthetic nose surgery is one of the most challenging operations because it results in a change that contributes significantly to improving the patient’s appearance and can significantly change the facial physiognomy. For those reasons such operations must be carried out by experts with outstanding skills and significant experience.
Nose correction is also a very important operation because it must keep in mind that the shape of the nose is one of the main facial features and it contributes to the overall harmony of the face. It is not difficult to understand that the physical appearance very often determines the psychological status of a person. For example, individuals with an irregular nose often lack self-confidence and experience emotional suffering. Emotionally vulnerable individuals can often be severely impacted by this and may not be able to make appropriate decisions in private and professional life. Therefore, it is necessary to stress out that each nose can be corrected. Based on our experience, after the surgery and recovery period is over the patients feel much better, are more self-confident and happier.
Beautiful shape of the nose is determined by its size and harmony with the entire face, regular features of the upper portion of the face, as well as the breadth and width of the nostrils and the nose.
The success of the operation depends on many factors. The choice of right surgeon is certainly one of the most important factors because it is easier to shape a nose which was not subjected to prior interventions or had not been injured – chances for a successful surgery are higher in those cases. Of course, several factors may significantly affect the outcome of the surgery, including the anatomy of the nose, bone strength, thickness of the cartilage and the original shape of the nose, as well as the reaction of the patient’s tissue to the surgery. If necessary, computer animation is used to meet all these requirements, which includes a presentation of possible results and the prospective shape of the nose. In this way it is possible to determine shape of the nose which best suits a particular face, which is a good prerequisite for a successful result. The use of ultrapulse laser, which makes real cuts without bleeding and facilitates the flow of operation and speeds the recovery also contributes to better and safer results. The most significant contribution of a laser in this type of operation is related to processing of the tip of the nose and cartilage, as well as the correction of the shape and size of the nostrils.
The surgical procedure is preceded by pre-operative assessment of a patient. The preparation also includes taking photographs in order to monitor the results. The surgery can be performed in local or general anesthesia and is completely painless and safe for the patient.
The operation takes from 30 to 90 minutes or even longer, depending on the type of intervention. In case of defects it is possible to perform intervention only on the tip of the nose or a complete nose which includes part of the bone. Alternatively, it is possible to perform a nose correction combined with functional operations such as the expansion of internal air passages in the nose. The latter operation is done in cooperation with an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon. This surgery does not result in visible scars, except when a significant correction of the size and width of the nostrils is required. Even in that case surgical cuts are made along natural edges and folds and are barely visible. During surgery the bone is reshaped and after the surgery an immobilization is placed at the outer side of the nose which needs to stay in place for 7 days. The main goal of the immobilization is to enable healing of bones in the new position and is very important to avoid injury within the initial 6 weeks after the procedure, which guarantees a safe outcome. Natural tissue repair process takes several weeks or even months after the surgery, but visible signs will have disappeared in about ten days following the operation. During the initial 7-10 days following the surgery the patient can expect significant swelling in the areas of the eyes and cheeks followed by hematomas (bruises), but this quickly disappears while discrete swelling is expected to disappear during the subsequent period. The tampons placed in the nasal cavity which are intended to support the new form of the nose are removed 7 days after the surgery. At the same time the immobilization placed outside of the nose is also removed, and the most sensitive post-operative phase is completed. These interventions are practically painless. If present, the pain has minimal intensity; this also facilitates the decision to undergo such a procedure.
Very often and as required, it is possible to combine rhinoplasty with a functional operation which involves correction of nasal septum deviation (septoplasty) in order to improve and increase the capacity of nasal passages.
The operation is performed in local or general anesthesia. In addition to the local anesthetic the patient also gets sleep medications, which makes the entire operating process more comfortable. It is recommended that the patient does not eat or drink several hours before the intervention. All necessary laboratory and other analyses are performed in the hospital, about half an hour before the intervention. The surgery can start after the patient will have met with the specialist of internal medicine and anesthesiologist. After the surgery, the patient stays in the hospital and remains under the supervision of professional staff for up to 24 hours. Subsequently, the patient is released to continue with home care. The first post-operative control is performed 7 days after the surgery, when tampons and immobilization are removed.
A sick leave is necessary for 7-10 days after the surgery when the swelling is visible and there is an external immobilization, however the patient is able to travel immediately after the operation.
We would like to emphasize that it is necessary to take the utmost care not to displace the immobilization for the initial 7 days after the surgery.
