Due to a loss of skin elasticity around the eyes, eyelids change their appearance already during the person’s middle age. This is characterized by excess skin, wrinkles, puffiness and fat pads give the appearance of ageing and fatigue. Excess skin on the upper eyelids can sometimes restrict the vision, while fat tissue deforms the eyelids and causes puffiness in the area of lower, upper or both eyelids. Cosmetic eyelid surgery -blepharoplasty, partially restores the rejuvenated and well-rested appearance of the entire face, especially the areas around the eyes. After the surgery, the eyes look larger, more open and their natural beauty is more pronounced.
Eyelid surgery removes excess skin from the upper eyelid and wrinkles from the lower eyelid, and fatty tissue from the eyelids. The surgical procedure lasts from one to two hours, depending on the type of surgery. The cuts are made on the upper eyelid ten millimeters above the rim, within the natural fold of the skin. The cuts on the lower eyelid are slightly closer to the edge of the lashes. When necessary, blepharoplasty may be performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as face lifting, which is another facial rejuvenation procedure.
Blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia, and can be also performed in analgosedation. In our hospital the patient stays for several hours, and is subsequently released to continue with home care.
Postoperative recovery after this intervention is individual and lasts for about a week. Sutures are removed on the seventh day after the surgery, and after ten days puffiness/swelling disappears and the patient can continue with regular activities.
